You do not need to be able to draw or have any art experience to benefit from art therapy. The focus of art therapy is not on the quality or artistic merit of the images you create, but rather on being able to freely express what you’re feeling using art materials.
Although each session varies according to the needs of the person, it usually involves making art followed by a verbal exploration of the image that was created. Afterwards, the emotional connections present in the art and the experience of making the art can also be reflected upon.

Guided by the therapist’s expertise and experience, together you can figure out exactly what the image means to you. The therapist may also point out themes and patterns that emerge through your art.
However, it may not be just the finished product that has therapeutic value, but also the process of making the art as well.
Basic art supplies such as tempera paint, markers, pastels, clay and collage materials, amongst others, are used. What can be done with the art materials is left up to the individual’s creativity. Some people also like to explore their feelings with music and movement.
